-- RAUFASER (2016) The word Raufaser literally translates to "rough grain." It comes from the German Raufasertapete (rough grain wallpaper), a wall covering ubiquitous in Germany where it can be found in nearly every domestic space. Originally it was used to wallpaper window displays. Valued for versatility, Raufasertapete is easy to peel off the wall and can be removed after up to seven coats of paint have been applied. My studio at Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral was covered in this wallpaper, so I decided to use the wall itself as a ground for a drawing. With brush and drink, I traced all the texture in the wallpaper as well as the layers of brush strokes on top of it. For me this is a means of adapting to a new space, of "leaving my mark," even though it gets painted over. It is also a means of articulating the material history of a space. -- |
