-- COLLAPSED BUILDING (2012) This is a hand-cut vinyl of a Soviet mass-produced apartment block in Koszalin, Poland, specifically the one in which I lived as a child. The image was developed through multiple processes of translation. First a photograph was taken, and used as a reference for an ink line drawing on fibre-reinforced PVC material. This drawing was later cut out and hung by its ends so that the building would droop. This was photographed. The photograph was then imported into illustrator, where the trace function interpreted the image anew. This image was then enlarged and printed onto adhesive vinyl. The multiple translations, the degradation of the initial image into something new, is a parallel to the function of memory. -- |
