-- UNFOLDED NICHE (2017) Unfolded Niche is a photographic re-creation of an architectural vestigial remain in my studio at the Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral. There, over the course of three months or so, I traced the strokes of paint atop the Raufasertapete covering the walls of a niche, which was presumably once a door leading into what is now the library. I wanted to re-present this "non-space" as a work that was no longer site specific, but not to document it. Instead, I wanted people to come up close and take their time looking at various parts of the piece. I decided to take many photographs of the doorway, all from one vantage point, and then stitched them together to create an amalgam of many individual perspectives. The result is a distorted view—literally a flattened space that then can be later inserted into other spaces. In contrast to the term "site specific," I'd consider this work to be "non-site specific,"--something relating directly to spatial indeterminacy. -- |
